Interesting note by Brandon Herrera that some of the weapons seen in use in this Ukraine conflict were designed closer to the American Revolutionary War than to the current conflict.

I thought the block applied to all war ships, but the articles I'm seeing all date from February/early March and so I'm not sure what the current situation is.
Nothing on it from Turkey, think the UK is still formulating a plan based on what we heard earlier from the UK Transport Minister.

Sink the lot of them russkies warships off Odessa, enough with the blockade. Africa will starve to death if this continues, pepper them with Harpoons from like everywhere. They have gone too far already
Russia does not really care if half the world starves. They have done the same to their own people many times.
In addition to your hit list, I would take a few yachts out and deep six them in the med as diving reefs.

It sounds really desperate for Ukraine in the east at the moment. I've seen a couple of reports (read: unsubstantiated tweets) that Russian jets are operating directly over some of the towns being contested, which would seem to indicate there isn't much in the way of air defence there? I wonder if the vast majority of what they have left is covering the larger cities and they can't spare any for the eastern frontline (other than MANPADS I guess, but those are mostly useless against jets by all accounts).

I think it's not that simple, as they have quite a few subs in the black sea (don't get me wrong I'm game for those being sunk also!).

Yeah that’s what I thought (save for ships from Black Sea nations IF their home port is in the Black Sea).

I guess Turkey would have to agree/change the rules re the blockade.

Turns out Russia has a workaround it can use for some vessels (smaller navy ships and maybe submarines) it has a bunch of inland waterways connecting the Baltic Sea, White Sea, Black Sea and Caspian Sea.

I thought the block applied to all war ships, but the articles I'm seeing all date from February/early March and so I'm not sure what the current situation is.

Article 19 of the Montreux Convention (which is, as I understand it, the relevant article of the treaty) says:

In time of war, Turkey not being belligerent, warships shall enjoy complete freedom of transit and
navigation through the Straits under the same conditions as those laid down in Articles 10 to 18.

Vessels of war belonging to belligerent Powers shall not, however, pass through the Straits except in
cases arising out of the application of Article 25 of the present Convention
, and in cases of assistance
rendered to a State victim of aggression in virtue of a treaty of mutual assistance binding Turkey,
concluded within the framework of the Covenant of the League of Nations, and registered and
published in accordance with the provisions of Article 18 of the Covenant.

In the exceptional cases provided for in the preceding paragraph, the limitations laid down in Articles
10 to 18 of the present Convention shall not be applicable.

Notwithstanding the prohibition of passage laid down in paragraph 2 above, vessels of war belonging
to belligerent Powers, whether they are Black Sea Powers or not, which have become separated from
their bases, may return thereto.

Vessels of war belonging to belligerent Powers shall not make any capture, exercise the right of visit
and search, or carry out any hostile act in the Straits.

I've emphasised what I think are the relevant sections: only "belligerent powers" - which at this time means only Russia and Ukraine - are excluded, warships of other nations may continue to pass unhindered under the usual terms of the convention.

That isn’t what they’ve actually done/announced though. Their current position is that they’ve blocked all warships.

Thing is, the blockade is mostly of last years crop, isn't it?

This years crop will be far, far lower as the most fertile parts are where the Russians are attacking the most. Between the fertile soil and petrochemical resources, it seems Russia intends to annex all the best parts of the country.

They did shoot down a Russian jet yesterday (or two days) ago.
