Even though it's a very common word, the often wrong I before E overruled actual common sense, struggling to string letters together to the point I stupidly even moved one of the letters I had in the right place, but ultimately that stupidity was the word which clinched it! I got it in 5 eventually.
I can see why it took others at least as many guesses and others would have got it really quickly.
PS I saw the UK version of Lingo for the first time on ITV last night (how DARE they remove The Chase!) and it is remarkable just how similar they are, even down to the colours used. The only difference is the time limit and the fact they give the first letter. Assuming the 80s version of Lingo in America used the same format then it's easy to see the influence for Wordle.
